Assistant Coach Mentoring Program
Are you a former HGSA player ages 17 - 21? Do you want to become an HGSA Coach, but hesitate because you lack coaching experience? Are you no longer eligible, but want to stay involved? Now you can join The HGSA Assistant Coach Mentoring Program and make the transition from ex-player to coach.
Our program is designed to help players break into the ranks of coaching. The goals of the mentoring program are threefold. First, we want to provide former players, with no coaching experience, an opportunity to apprentice for a year with an experienced team of coaches. Our second goal is to take advantage of the knowledge and skills participants developed as players in the coaching and instruction of future players. Lastly, by encouraging the integration of former players into the coaching ranks we hope to strengthen the heritage and enrich the quality of HGSA as a whole.
How it works:
Fill out and submit a regular coaching application. Be sure to indicate on the application that you are applying as a ‘trainee’. If there is a particular coach you want to be mentored by, a particular team, and or age group you would like to be involved with, include this information on your application. After review and approval by the HGSA board, you will be assigned to a team and contacted by your head coach pertaining to practice schedules, game schedules, and meetings, etc. As an Assistant Coach in Training you will have the ability to participate in all practices, games, meetings, clinics, etc. You will learn the rules of the game, how to set goals, conduct a practice, learn new drills, evaluate and motivate players, score games, create rosters and batting orders, etc.
An hGsa ‘trainee’ t-shirt will be provided by the Board. Because of strict league rules regarding player assignments, Assistant Coaches in Training will not be permitted to designate a player for assignment to their team. Beyond the specifics mentioned here. All other rules and regulations governing coaches will apply.
Do you love the game of girls’ fast pitch softball? Do you want to have fun teaching young girls good sportsmanship and the joy of the game? Do you want to stay involved in a great organization, and give back to the community? Then you should consider the HGSA Assistant Coach Mentoring Program. Apply today!
Frequently Asked Questions
Please read the 'Player Guide & Frequent Questions' link at the left. We have included many of the common questions we receive along with their answers. This is to help provide information as quickly as possible.
One common question is "What equipment does my daughter need?":
hGsa provides each girl with a team shirt. Girls are responsible for their own shorts, glove, and shoes/cleats. We recommend players wait to purchase shorts until after their coach contacts them - some coaches ask players to wear certain color shorts so the team matches.
Metal cleats are NOT allowed. Girls may wear tennis shoes or plastic cleats. In order to slide, girls must wear a slider. Many girls also choose to purchase a helmet, which must have a face mask and be NOCSAE-certified. If you wish to purchase your daughter a bat, it must be a softball bat that is ASA-approved.
If you have an idea for a question/answer that we should include on the list, please send it to the 'Contact the Webmaster' link.
hGsa Needs You!
Do you know that for over 700 girls in hGsa, there are only about a dozen board members? We are always looking for more members to join our board and help the girls of tomorrow. If you are interested in helping out the hGsa program, please contact info@hilliardgirlssoftball.com.
